The Rangers want their website back

Filed under: Baseball, Hockey — Noah W. Smith @ 12:45 pm

I read an interesting article on Paid Content this morning concerning the New York Rangers’ desire to regain control of their domain. In an effort to mirror the success of MLB.com, the NHL has required its constituent teams to surrender independent control of their websites, and the Rangers are not giving up without a fight. Their main complaint seems to be rooted in the fact that they will not receive 100% of the profit from merchandise sales on the site as they have done in the past. MLB must have some sort of revenue sharing plan to alleviate this issue, and my best guess is that this lawsuit will result in similar settlement rather than a full return of possession to the Rangers.

Slinking back off the ledge

Filed under: Baseball — Noah W. Smith @ 12:21 pm

Well, its possible that I got caught up just a little too much in the recent wailing and tearing of hair here in Boston. The Sawx still have the best record in the AL with three games to play, and the magic number to clinch the division is 2. The bad news? Competition for the best record is with Cleveland, who has three games at Kansas City to close the season, while we are facing last year’s MVP and Cy Young winners in Minnesota…

Panic in The Nation

Filed under: Baseball — Noah W. Smith @ 9:50 pm

It’s getting a little testy here in Boston, with the Sox leading the AL East by a mere 1.5 games. With Bob Ryan’s color-coded Alert System going off the charts, and yet another Gagné disaster, I had reasonably high hopes for tonight’s game. With the kid who pitched a no-hitter last time out on the hill, what could go wrong? Another bullpen implosion, thats what.

With twelve games left in the season, the good news is that the magic number to make the playoffs by any means necessary is three. There’s pretty much no way to blow that, now. The two things still at stake are home-field advantage (a big deal in a 5 game series), as well as a new rule: first choice of playoff schedules to the team with the best record in each league. Manny, Youkilis, Crisp, Matsuzaka, Okajima and Schilling are all taking time off this week to get healthy - hopefully that will pay off in the playoffs, assuming we get there…

The battle for Localhost

Filed under: Business, Evil, Software — Noah W. Smith @ 2:55 pm

So I’m installing Internet Explorer 7 on my PC so I can test Common Kitchen on a multitude of browsers, and the first time I run the program I see one of those little bubbles pop up from the system tray:

A battle of evilness!

WHOA! What just happened? Microsoft tried to underhandedly change my default search engine (to Live.com no doubt), and then Google thought they would help me out by monitoring attempts to change that setting. I appreciate the sentiment, but I honestly don’t remember telling Google they could do that.

Turns out this is part of the “Google Toolbar” package and I missed it in all the fine print. In my book, both companies are awfully close to evil here…

Booksale loot

As you can see, I found a few good things at this year’s book sale, including several items on my Common Kitchen Wishlist. First recipe to try? The Remarkable Fudge recipe from Better Homes and Garden’s New Cook Book that comes so highly recommended by Parker.

You can also see a few books on finance and small business management in there, so it’s not all fun and games…

Search in Google Reader (Finally!)

Filed under: Blogging, Search — Noah W. Smith @ 10:06 am

I am an avid user of Google Reader, but I have had several days when I needed to find something I had read previously, but couldn’t because a search box was inexplicably left out. I mean, it’s Google Reader, right? Well, they finally fixed that!
